TALKEETNA
HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Happy Winter! We are now on winter hours : Friday - Saturday - Sunday from 10am to 4pm Please call 907-733-2487 to schedule an appointment or speak to the manager.
The Talkeetna Historical Society was founded in 1972 by residents concerned with protecting the original Talkeetna Schoolhouse (“the little red schoolhouse”) and Talkeetna’s history. THS now owns and operates the schoolhouse as a museum. We are a non profit organization which safeguards this rural Alaskan village and its region with preservation of the past, in the museum and with 5 other historic buildings and grounds.
Fundraising events, along with museum admissions and donations, enable THS to continue to work on project such as the complete restoration of the Ole Dahl cabin and the Three German Bachelor’s cabin, collection of artifacts, protection of Belle’s Barn historic site near the Susitna River and its interpretive trail. THS protects over 2,000 artifacts and archives as well as hundreds of photographs. The famous “Denali mountain model” is in the mountaineering room of the museum. In addition to exhibits in the museum, there is a museum store, which offers a large selection of books about the area and its history. Please join THS in conserving and preserving Talkeetna’s past by becoming a member and by making a contribution to the Talkeetna Historical Society.
Our mission is preserving, interpreting and sharing Talkeetna’s past, to enrich the present and inspire the future. The Talkeetna Historical Society preserves the character, stories, artifacts, and historic structures of our area with the purpose to collect, preserve, research, and interpret the heritage of Talkeetna, Alaska, and thereby fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of our community’s history, art, and natural environment by all.
