Talkeetna Cemetery History
In 1919 there was an executive order by the BLM to set aside this 9.76 acres for a cemetery. It was part of the Railroad survey #1260. The original cemetery, used by the natives, was at the end of the town airstrip but erosion took it away and the current cemetery started having inhabitants in the 50s. There is a story regarding the ‘unknown female’ who was a young girl that was buried in the old cemetery and when the river erosion took over they brought her over to the current cemetery.
Cemetery Association
The VFW and Cemetery Association have worked together to maintain it. Ace Ebling, Roberta Sheldon, Dorthy Jones, Myron Stevens and Johnny Baker founded the Cemetery Association in 1982. Local artist, Kevin Foster, made the gates. The cemetery is maintained by volunteers.
